Revised UN Pakistan Humanitarian Response Plan May 20, 2009

The latest United Nations appeal for humanitarian aid to Pakistan, called the Pakistan Humanitarian Response Plan (PHRP) version 1.4, which outlines the needs at over $543 million. This document was updated, approved and then then launhced on May 20 and May 22 respectively.

STEP’s IDP Assessment of District Mardan

STEP is a Mardan-based NGO that has done is own assessment of the IDP population in Mardan District. You’ll note that Hatian’s schools are not included, so this is a good effort, but not a comprehensive one. Even then, the numbers are indicative of the scale of crisis evolving in Mardan.

May 15th Update from the Provincial Relief Commissionerate

Another update from the Provincial Releif Commissionerate. The numbers of IDPs registered by the Provincial Social Welfare Department of the NWFP has now crossed 1.6 million (this includes all IDPs, not just those from Swat).

UNESCO on Why IDPs should be Supported (14 May 09)

Excerpt:  “Until recently education was not considered as part of humanitarian response by many donors but on the basis of experience of various emergencies this attitude has been changing as it has become clear that education can, and should, be part of the humanitarian response, and that ensuring access to education is vital to restore the routine of school and counter the destabilizing influences present when large number of children and youth no longer have that routine and the positive effects of education.

USAID’s IDP Emergency Fact Sheet for Pakistan

USAID has issued a Fact Sheet, titled Pakistan: Complex Emergency. It contains useful information, particularly about the American response to the crisis.
